10% of Britain cannot access a GP outside working hours

Shocking new figures analysed by the BBC show that over one in ten Britons cannot get an appointment to see their GP at evenings or weekends, putting lives at risk. This disgraceful news is another blow to Theresa May's conservative government, which has come under increasing fire for it's failure to invest properly in the UK's greatest asset, the NHS.

The figures also revealed that just two NHS areas offered full provision of GP services to all patients; full provision is defined as "seven-day 8am to 8pm" access to GPs.

The data casts increasing doubt on the ability of the government to look after the NHS, since David Cameron promised at the 2014 Conservative Party conference that everyone in England would have full provision GP services by 2020. This puts them well on track to break that promise, and further damages the prospects of the NHS which has come under huge strain since being subject to damaging cuts to funding since 2010.

In some cases, patients with severe debilitating illnesses are being forced to wait weeks just to see a GP, putting their wellbeing at risk. Olivia Djouadi, from Bromley in London regularly faces waiting two or three weeks for an appointment for her disabled son, whom she cares for.

She said "At 8 o'clock, it seems they've booked all the slots for the day. If you are even slightly late, like 8.15, there is no chance of seeing someone that day". Bromley is one of the best NHS areas in the country according to the figures.

Jonathon Ashworth MP, Labour's Shadow Health Secretary has said "This is yet more evidence that the Tories have broken their promised on access to GPs seven days a week. The truth is that years of austerity has taken its toll on general practice"

Mr Ashworth called a long-term investment plan for primary healthcare in Britain, while a spokesman for the Department of Health and Social care claimed that "already millions have benefitted" from their own plans.
