This could be the end of Trump

Michael Cohen's implication of Donald Trump's involvement in breaking election laws could finally bring the demise of the much-maligned president. Cohen, who pleaded guilty to eight violations of federal laws, including fraud, said under oath that Trump had ordered him to pay money out of campaign funding to two women who claimed they had an affair with him. This is a felony, and could be grounds for impeachment if the Democrats win control of Congress in November.

While it is up for legal debate whether a sitting president can be indicted while in office, it is clear that this revelation by Trump's former lawyer will be very damaging to the president. By saying, under oath, that his former employer is complicit in a crime, Cohen has given the anti-Trump members of Congress more than enough grounds to begin impeachment proceedings.

However, this is quite unlikely. Several representatives introduced a resolution to impeach Donald Trump, including Al Green in December 2017, which failed by a margin of 355-66. While animosity towards the president is high in the Capitol building, lawmakers will need a very good reason for impeachment to avoid what will look like a betrayal of their base of voters.

Michael Cohen has also agreed to cooperate as much as possible with the Special Counsel Robert Mueller, and his investigation into the Trump campaign. This could potentially reveal damaging information into other felonies committed by the president. Despite this, Trump has denied he knew about the payments that are the main issue of the moment. In an interview with reporters, he said that he knew after the payments had been made, but this contradicts what he said in April that he knew nothing about the payments allegedly made.
